QatarEnergy, HD Hyundai Heavy ink $3.9 billion deal for 17 LNG carriers - LNG Prime

LNG giant QatarEnergy has signed a shipbuilding deal worth about $3.9 billion with South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries for the construction of 17 174,000-cbm LNG carriers as part of the second phase of its giant shipbuilding program.

The contract valued at 14.2 billion Qatari riyals, or about $3.9 billion, marks the start of the second phase of QatarEnergy’s LNG ship acquisition program.

This puts the price tag for a single vessel at about $229 million, much lower then the current average price for a newbuild LNG carrier in South Korea of about $260-$265 million.

The Korean vessels that were ordered as part of the first phase of the shipbuilding progam were priced at about $215 million.

77 confirmed LNG carriers

Under the first phase, QatarEnergy contracted 60 LNG carriers at South Korea’s three shipbuilders HHI, SHI, and Hanwha Ocean, and China’s Hudong-Zhonghua.

Today’s agreement brings the total number of confirmed new LNG vessels to be delivered to QatarEnergy and its affiliates to 77, with more to follow, QatarEnergy said.

These “ultra-modern” vessels will support QatarEnergy’s expanding LNG production capacity from the North Field LNG expansion and Golden Pass LNG export projects as well as its long-term fleet replacement requirements, QatarEnergy said.

The firm previously said expects the number of contracted vessels to grow to more than 100 LNG carriers in the future.

QatarEnergy also previously reserved slots at the yards for these vessels and also signed multiple time charter parties with various shipowners during 2022 for the first phase of the program.

This LNG shipbuilding program is the largest of its kind in the history of the LNG industry.

In addition, LNG Prime recently reported, citing shipbuilding sources, that QatarEnergy is planning a major order of Q-Max LNG carriers at yards in South Korea and China.

Q-Max LNG

Qatar’s energy minister and chief executive of QatarEnergy, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, signed the contract for 17 vessels in Seoul on Wednesday with Ka Sam-hyun, CEO of HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE).

“These 17 LNG carriers will be built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries to the highest technical and environmental standards and specifications. Further, the vessels are designed to achieve optimal fuel efficiency and significant reduction in carbon emissions,” he said.

LNG production expansion

QatarEnergy LNG, previously known as Qatargas, currently operates 14 LNG production trains with a capacity of about 77 Mtpa in Ras Laffan.

However, QatarEnergy is significantly increasing its LNG production from the North Field.

This first phase of the North Field expansion project will increase Qatar’s LNG production capacity from 77 to 110 Mtpa, while the second phase will further boost capacity to total 126 Mtpa.

QatarEnergy & CNPC Sign Agreements

QatarEnergy signed Tuesday definitive agreements with China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), covering the long-term supply of LNG to China and partnership in the North Field East LNG expansion project (NFE).

The two parties signed an LNG Sales and Purchase Agreement (SPA) for the delivery of 4 million tons of LNG per annum from the NFE project to CNPCs receiving terminals in China over a span of 27 years, marking the industrys longest term SPA commitment.

The two parties also signed a share sale and purchase agreement pursuant to which QatarEnergy will transfer to CNPC a 5% interest in the equivalent of one NFE train with a capacity of 8 million tons per annum. This transfer will see CNPC become a partner in the NFE project and will not affect the participating interests of any of the other shareholders in the project.

The agreements were signed by HE Minister of State for Energy Affairs, and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, and Chairman of CNPC Dai Houliang, during a special ceremony held at QatarEnergys headquarters and attended by senior executives from both companies.

In remarks at the signing ceremony, HE Al Kaabi welcomed CNPC as a valuable partner in the NFE project. His Excellency articulated, "We are pleased to embark on this partnership with CNPC and to build on the excellent relations between the Peoples Republic of China and the State of Qatar. These agreements demonstrate our unwavering commitment to our customers and partners and to our shared ambition for a sustainable future facilitated by a cleaner, and more eco-friendly energy source that would catalyze substantial socio-economic development." HE Al Kaabi expressed his thanks and appreciation to the teams from CNPC and QatarEnergy for their dedication and for working tirelessly to finalize the agreements.

On his part, Chairman of CNPC, Dai Houliang said: "Our collaboration over the NFE project represents a major achievement and excellent practice of both CNPC and QatarEnergy in delivering on the strategic consensus of the leaders of our countries. It is another milestone in forming a strategic synergy between Chinas "Belt and Road" Initiative and Qatars National Vision 2030. It lays a solid foundation for the energy cooperation between the two sides in the next three decades. From this brand-new starting point, CNPC will continue to actively discuss with QatarEnergy all-round cooperation across the hydrocarbon industry chain and other areas like green and low carbon energies, so as to build a stable, long-term, and multi-dimensional strategic partnership."
