GlobalFoundries sees strong demand for IoT chips, automotive and smart devices after strong quarterly earnings - Albany Business Review (bizjournals.com)

GlobalFoundries' revenue grew by 23% to $1.99 billion during the second quarter, fueled by demand for computer chips in smart mobile devices, data centers, communications networks, cars and trucks.

Revenue in each of those end markets increased by anywhere from 14% to 50% for the quarter that ended June 30, compared with the same period last year.

Growth in each of those categories was outpaced by demand for chips used for the Internet of Things (IoT), the arena where chips, sensors, software and other technology allow us to make digital payments, automate factories and adjust the temperature in our refrigerator or living room from a phone.

Revenue in GlobalFoundries' home and industrial IoT market increased by 72% to $346 million during the quarter, compared with the same time frame last year.

"We are on track for home and industrial IoT to be the fastest growing market for [GlobalFoundries] in 2022," chief financial officer David Reeder told analysts Tuesday during the company's second quarter earnings call.

As the company had projected, revenue in personal computing was GlobalFoundries' only end market that did not grow. Sales in that category decreased by 38% to $95 million.

The chip manufacturer (Nasdaq: GFS) announced its quarterly earnings hours before President Joe Biden signed the Chips and Science Act, a bipartisan deal that includes $52 billion in incentives to encourage manufacturers to produce more chips in America.

Access to federal funding is one of the final ingredients GlobalFoundries has been looking for as the company decides when to start construction of a $6 billion to $8 billion chip factory next to its headquarters and manufacturing complex in Malta.

Malta planners unanimously approved a proposed 633,000-square-foot expansion on July 26. GlobalFoundries also plans to purchase 800 acres in the Luther Forest Technology Campus, the wooded Saratoga County industrial park that surrounds the company's existing $15 billion headquarters and factory. The expansion is expected to create an additional 1,000 jobs.

Those moves come amid recent reports that supply chain disruptions, which hampered production of everything from cars and smartphones to household appliances, are starting to wane.

GlobalFoundries chief executive Tom Caulfield assured analysts during the earnings call that demand for GlobalFoundries' technology remains strong.

The company started this year with demand that was 25% higher than available capacity.

"Today, demand continues to outpace our ability to supply by about 10%," Caulfield said.

"We remain oversubscribed for 2022 and 2023."

"현재 수요는 우리 생산용량을 10%정도 초과하고 있고, 2022년과 2023년은 수요 초과 상태이다"라고

실무 책임자 톰콜필드는 말했다.

The order pipeline remains strong as the company finished its most recent quarter with $538 million in gross profit, up from $231 million during the second quarter in 2021.

"We expect to grow revenue and profit through the remainder of this year and next," Caulfield told analysts.

Outlook for GlobalFoundries' demand also got another boost this week when the company announced California chip designer Qualcomm has added $4.2 billion to its chip purchasing agreement with GlobalFoundries. That work will be performed at the GlobalFoundries' manufacturing complex in Malta.

Through the long-term capacity reservation agreement, GlobalFoundries now expects to generate $7.4 billion in revenue from Qualcomm through 2028, according to documents filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
