PREFACE

 

이 책의 발간 목적은 전세계적으로 한국에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있는 가운데,

한국의 소설이나 시에 대한 영어 번역본이 부족한 상태에서 이를 해소하고자,

지난 번에 소설 '청황제의 목숨을 살린 임장군'의 번역본을 발간한데 이어,

이번에는 한국의 대표적인 시인 윤동주의 시 20편을 수록한 번역본을 발간하게 되었다.

 

그리고 이 번역을 완성할 수있도록  격려해 준 아내 정춘희와 장모 김순남 여사에게 감사의 마음을 전합니다.

 

The purpose of publishing this book is to address the lack of English translations of Korean novels and poetry,

at a time when global interest in Korea is increasing.

Following the publication of the translated version of the novel  "General Lim Who Saved the Life of the Emperor of Qing Dynasty in China" last time, we have now published a translated version that includes 20 poems by Dongju Yun ,

one of Korea's representative poets.

 

And I would like to express my gratitude to my wife, Jung Chunheui, and my mother-in-law, Mrs. Kim Sunnam,

for their encouragement to help me complete this translation.

 

윤동주 (1917~1945)는 한국을 대표하는  시인이며  두만강 북쪽의 북간도에서 태어났다. 

1943년 7월 독립운동 혐의로 일본 경찰에 검거되어 2년 형을 선고받고 형무소에 수감되었다가 1945년 2월에 28세의 젊은 나이로 옥사했다.

 

Dongju Yun(1917-1945) was a poet who represented Korea and was born in the northern part of Gando,

near the Tumen River.
In July 1943, he was arrested by the Japanese police on charges of independence movement activities

and sentenced to two years in prison.

He was imprisoned until February 1945 when, at the young age of 28, he passed away.

별헤는밤     Counting the Stars at Night

계절이 지나가는 하늘에는
가을로 가득 차 있습니다.

In the passing sky of changing seasons,
It is filled with the essence of autumn.

나는 아무 걱정도 없이
가을 속의 별들을 다 헤일 듯합니다...

I effortlessly count all the stars
within the autumn sky, without any worry.

가슴 속에 하나 둘 새겨지는 별을
이제 다 못 헤는 것은
쉬이 아침이 오는 까닭이요,
내일 밤이 남은 까닭이요,
아직 나의 청춘이 다하지 않은 까닭입니다.

The stars engraved one by one in my heart,
Now I can't count them all
Because dawn breaks easily,
Because there's another night left for tomorrow,
Because my youth is not yet complete.

별 하나에 추억과
별 하나에 사랑과
별 하나에 쓸쓸함과
별 하나에 동경과
별 하나에 시와
별 하나에 어머니, 어머니

With one star, memories reside,
With one star, love resides,
With one star, loneliness resides,
With one star, longing resides,
With one star, poetry resides,
With one star, mother, mother.

어머님, 나는 별 하나에 아름다운 말 한 마디씩 불러 봅니다. 

Mother, I try to utter a beautiful word with each single star.

소학교 때 책상을 같이했던 아이들의 이름과, 

패, 경, 옥 이런 이국 소녀들의 이름과, 

벌써 아기 어머니 된 계집애들의 이름과, 

가난한 이웃 사람들의 이름과, 

비둘기, 강아지, 토끼, 노새, 노루, 

'프랑시스 잠', '라이너 마리아 릴케', 이런 시인의 이름을 불러 봅니다.

The names of the kids I shared a desk with in elementary school,
Names like Pei, Kyung, and Ok from foreign lands,
The names of girls who have already become young mothers,
The names of our impoverished neighbors,
Pigeon, puppy, rabbit, old horse, deer,
I call out names like 'Francis Jammes,' 'Rainer Maria Rilke,' these poets' names.

이네들은 너무나 멀리 있습니다.
별이 아스라이 멀 듯이,

They are so far away,
Like stars scattered in the distance,

어머님,
그리고 당신은 멀리 북간도에 계십니다

Mother,

And you are far away in Bukkando

나는 무엇인지 그리워
이 많은 별빛이 내린 언덕 위에
내 이름자를 써 보고,
흙으로 덮어 버리었읍니다.

Longing for what I am,
On this hill where countless starlights fall,
I write my own name,
And cover it with soil.

딴은, 밤을 새워 우는 벌레는
부끄러운 이름을 슬퍼하는 까닭입니다.

The firefly that keeps the night awake, weeping,
It's because of the sorrowful name it carries with shame.

그러나 겨울이 지나고 나의 별에도 봄이 오면
무덤 위에 파란 잔디가 피어나듯이
내 이름자 묻힌 언덕 위에도
자랑처럼 풀이 무성할 게외다.

But when winter passes and spring comes to my star,
Just like blue grass blossoms on the tomb,
Upon the hill where my name is buried,
The grass will flourish proudly.

CHAPTER 2  White Shadow

흰 그림자 White Shadow

황혼이 짙어지는 길모금에서
하로종일 시들은 귀를 가만히 기울이면
땅검의 옮겨지는 발자취소리,

As twilight deepens in the winding path,
If you quietly listen with withered ears all day long,
You can hear the shifting footsteps of the dark earth.

발자취소리를 들을수 있도록
나는 총명했든가요.

Am I perceptive enough
to hear the sound of footsteps?

이제 어리석게도 모든 것을 깨달은 다음
오래 마음 깊은 속에
괴로워하든 수많은 나를
하나, 둘 제고장으로 돌려보내면

Now, foolishly, after realizing everything,
Deep in my heart for a long time,
If I send away countless versions of myself,
One, two, back to their origin,

거리모퉁이 어둠속으로
소리없이 사라지는 흰 그림자,

The white shadow disappearing silently
Into the darkness of the street corner,

흰 그림자들
연연히 사랑하든 흰 그림자들,

The white shadows,
Lovingly, the white shadows,

내 모든 것을 돌려 보낸뒤
허전히 뒷골목을 돌아
황혼처럼 물드는 내방으로 돌아오면

After sending away everything I have,
Lonely, turning back to the alley,
Returning to my room, dimming like twilight,

신념이 깊은 의젓한 양처럼
하로종일 시름없이 풀포기나 뜯자.

Like a solemn and steadfast sheep with deep conviction,
Let's spend the whole day without worries, tearing apart blades of grass.
