Thanks to hybrid work and digitization, India PC shipments grew to a record 14.8 million units in 2021, according to IDC. However, the stability of components supply continues to be a key factor affecting individual players and the whole market.

According to a survey released by IDC, PC shipments, including desktop computers, notebooks and workstations, increased 44.5% on year to 14.8 million units in India in 2021. Notebooks still account for three-fourths of the shipments, but thanks to the continuous demand from the education and large enterprises sectors, desktop computer shipments grew by more than 30%.

HP is the top vendor by market share, and its shipments grew by 58.7% on year, the highest rate among the top-five vendors. At the same time, HP has a strong market share of more than 30% in both the commercial and consumer segments. Dell secured the second position with a 23.6% share and shipped more than one million units for a second consecutive quarter.

IANS cited Ketan Patel, managing director of HP India, as saying that the world will remain in a hybrid mode irrespective of the new Omicron strain, and many SMEs are trying to join the digital bandwagon. He believed that with a PC penetration of 14-15%, far lower than other economies' 40-50%, India represents a massive opportunity.

Dell holds a similar view. Jean-Guillaume Pons, Dell's Client Solutions Group Asia-Pacific, Japan and Greater China senior vice president, told Financial Express that hybrid work is here to stay, and most of the companies they surveyed said they would continue working in the hybrid work culture.

New competitors, such as Xiaomi and Realme, forayed into India's PC market with a series of new product launches. IDC pointed out that they were struggling to fully capitalize on market opportunities due to the inability to get timely supply of components. But expected improvements to supplies in the second half of 2022 would help them gain some traction.

IDC said that students are replacing their smartphones or tablets with PCs as their remote-learning devices which would be helpful for the consumer segment. However, supply issues and rising prices may cause the government and education sectors to delay procurement.
